We get asked this a lot: "How do you make sure you are always put together?"
Plot twist: we're not.
This morning, one of us biked to the shop with wet hair. The other had yogurt on her sleeve before 8am, courtesy of a puppie in the house.
Here's the secret nobody tells you: it's not about being perfect. It's about picking clothes that survive your actual life. That's it. That's the trick. Below are the three rules we build every wardrobe around — ours included.
1. Pick clothes that fit your life, not the other way around
Before you fall for a piece, ask yourself one question: will this survive my Tuesday? If you bike to work, a fabric that creases at the first hint of movement is going to fight you all day. If you've got kids at home, anything that isn't machine-washable at 30° is a piece you'll wear once and then quietly avoid.
This isn't about lowering your standards. It's about raising them in the right direction. A wool-blend knit that shrugs off a bike ride, a dress that doesn't need a steamer every time it comes out of the drawer, trousers that forgive a chaotic school run — that's what elegant actually looks like when it has to work for a living. Style that can't keep up with you isn't stylish. It's just inconvenient.
2. Wear the same basics, invest in the accessories that elevate them
You don't need twenty outfits. You need five basics you genuinely love, worn on repeat, and a small collection of pieces that do the transforming. This is where people overspend in the wrong place — more clothes, less impact — instead of underspending in the right one.
A great scarf, a bold pair of earrings, a belt that actually does something — these are what turn "same shirt as last Tuesday" into "wait, did she change?" Nobody at the school gate or in your Monday meeting is counting your outfits. They're noticing how you wear them. Buy fewer clothes, buy better ones, and let your accessories carry the variety. It's a smaller wardrobe with a bigger range — and honestly, a much saner way to get dressed in the morning.
3. Layer like you mean it
Belgian weather doesn't make decisions, so your outfit shouldn't have to either. Cold morning, overheated office, freezing terrace at lunch — a good wardrobe has an answer for all three without a full outfit change in between.
Start with one elegant knit as your base. It's warm enough to stand alone, light enough to layer under a blazer or coat, and — unlike a bulky sweater — it doesn't turn you into a different silhouette the second you take your coat off. Add a structured layer on top for polish, and you've got a look that moves through your entire day instead of just the ten minutes you spent choosing it.
The key takeaway
None of this is a rulebook. It's permission — to stop chasing "perfectly styled" and start choosing pieces that actually work for the life you're living. Bike, kids, back-to-back meetings, unpredictable weather: your wardrobe should be the one thing that isn't fighting you.
