I love them on the hanger, but on me?
That's the question one of you sent us, and honestly? We hear it in the shop every week. Wide-leg trousers look effortless on someone else, and then you put them on and suddenly you're wearing a lot of fabric.
Here's the good news: it's almost never the trousers. It's the balance around them. Get that right and wide-leg trousers become the most comfortable and the most elegant thing in your wardrobe. Here are our three go-to tips, straight from the fitting room.
Tip 1: Keep it close on top
Your trousers already bring all the volume, so let your top bring the calm. A fitted top creates balance and keeps you looking like you, not like you're wearing a lot of fabric.
- Think fitted, not tight. A fine knit, a slim tee, a bodysuit or a tailored shirt all work.
- Shorter or tucked. The less fabric hanging over the waistband, the cleaner your line.
- Easy on the extras. No ruffles, puffy sleeves or big volume above the waist. One statement zone is enough.
Tip 2: Going oversized? Show your waist anyway
Love a big knit or a roomy shirt? Go for it, rules are tips, not laws. Just make sure your waist still shows up somewhere. That one point of definition keeps the look intentional instead of shapeless.
- Tuck it. A full tuck, a front tuck or a loose half-tuck all count.
- Belt it. Over an oversized shirt, a long cardigan or even a blazer.
- Knot it. Tie the hem of a shirt at your waist for an easy, relaxed version.
- Open it. Wear a long oversized layer open over a fitted base, so the waist peeks through.
Tip 3: Always let the tip of your shoe peek out
This is the one people forget. When the hem swallows your shoes completely, the trousers start wearing you. A little tip of the shoe showing makes the whole leg look longer and the look instantly more polished.
- Choose your shoes before you hem. The length depends on the heel, so take them to the tailor.
- Aim for the hem to just touch the top of your foot, with the front of the shoe visible.
- Pointed toes lengthen most, in a heel, a flat or a loafer.
- Sneakers work too. Keep the hem a touch shorter so the toe still shows and nothing drags.
Fabric is everything
The same cut feels completely different in another fabric. Stiff cotton adds volume, a fluid wool or crepe moves with you. For autumn and winter, this is where wide-legs really shine.
- Wool and wool blends fall straight and keep their shape all day. Perfect for the office.
- Soft knit or jersey wide-legs pair with a fine merino for the coziest polished look you'll ever wear.
- Rich colours like chocolate brown, burgundy or forest green feel new without trying too hard. Tone-on-tone is your friend.
- Invest once. A good pair of wide-legs from a brand like March23 or By Malene Birger works for years, with everything from a white shirt to a chunky knit
